Bahia is a popular low maintenance lawn grass. It's a hardy sod used in areas without irrigation. This is a common pasture grass, that with proper care and maintenance can provide an attractive lawn. Bahia is drought resistant due to its deep roots and it is best used in sunny areas. It needs to be mowed often due to the seed heads and in order to keep weeds down. The primary uses for Bahia are residential and commercial lawns and erosion control.
Bahia Characteristics:
Like other Florida turf types, Floratam is a vigorous, coarse-textured species forming stolon's or above-ground stems that reach out for several feet. St. Augustine is one of the most popular southern grasses for a beautiful lawn and requires full sun to thrive.
Stolon's of Floratam are large, purplish-red in color with internodes averaging 3 inches in length. Floratam is extremely deep rooted and is the most drought-tolerant of all St. Augustine grasses.
Weed growth competes with turf grass growth. Good maintenance practices help eliminate weed problems. However, it may be necessary even under the best of care, to apply herbicides to maintain weed free turf grass.
After a good turf has become established, good maintenance practices will result in a dense, weed-free, uniform turf with a minimum of problems. Good maintenance involves proper mowing, fertilizing, watering and control of weeds, nematodes, insects and diseases.
